Anderson County Area Guide

Anderson County, South Carolina was named after the Revolutionary War leader Robert Anderson. The area is located in the northwestern part of the state just along the Georgia border, and residents here enjoy a mild climate with four distinct seasons and a thriving economic and culturally diverse community. The area is home to Hartwell Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake with nearly 1,000 miles of shoreline for recreational use. The area has one of the lowest costs of living in the nation, and the city acts as an industrial, commercial, and tourist center. The city is affectionately called the City of Hospitality for its mountain air and scenic gardens.

Anderson County History

Originally Anderson County was occupied by the Cherokee Indians until 1777 when the area was ceded by treaty to the state. The area was formerly known as the Pendleton District, but was renamed Anderson in 1826 when the Pendleton District was divided into Anderson and Pickens. Most of the early settlers here were Scotch-Irish farmers who moved from Pennsylvania and Virginia in the 1700s. Due to a local engineer named William Whitner, hydroelectricity could be transmitted to mills throughout the county via wire. The first electric cotton gin was also operated in Anderson County in 1897. Soon after Anderson became known as the â Electric Cityâ, a nickname that still holds to this day.

Anderson County Parks & Recreation

Sumter National Forest
Cherokee and other Native American tribes hunted and established villages in this forest for centuries, and farmers worked in the fields and harvested timber here. Irish immigrants arrived and constructed railroads and tunnels to navigate the terrain, while others came to mine gold and other precious metals. Now the forest offers a variety of recreational activities for visitors including hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, bird watching, and picnicking.
